I’ve played a number of different MMOs, and over the years have noticed different typos and spelling errors in quest dialogue boxes and in mission briefings. Today, while playing Champions Online, I was standing around, waiting for a certain object to manifest, when I noticed the following dialogue from a nearby ARGENT henchmen pop up:

Instead of being spelled as ‘Millennium City’, which would have been correct, it showed up as ‘Mellenium City’. At first I thought it was just my imagination, so I paid no mind. After flying around the area for a bit, I saw it again and knew it wasn’t just my imagination.

I could report this, but it’s so insignificant to the overall game, that I am not going to. Instead, I’m just granting it immortality in the depths of my blog, where other notable errors have been recorded over time.

Until the day there is no more bad spelling, Mitra will go on fighting bad spelling in her quest to rid the world of evil.

It has become increasingly apparent that in this day and age, checking over every last detail in an article before sending it out to the presses is becoming a thing of the past. Where have the days gone when journalists and their editors nitpicked over the tiniest details? When they would not let the smallest errors slip by? Seems in this day of Tweets and instant messages, there is no time for attention to detail. As evidenced by the article below that I found in today’s Toronto Star.

One would have thought that a case as widely publicized as the Rengal case that the journalists would have been able to at least spell the name of the victim correctly. Alas, this isn’t the case.

So, Toronto Star, which spelling is it? The one in the first caption, or the one in the second caption? Judging by the first mention of the name, it would be the second spelling. Too bad your editors don’t have the best attention to detail. If they did, you wouldn’t need to have the “Report Error or Complaint” link in this article. Or, for that matter, in any other article because you would have researched your facts and you would have got it correct the first time.

There is a certain level of expectations that people put in our journalists and newspaper editors. One of those expectations is that these people are versed in the language they’re communicating in. In this case, the language of choice would be English. However, it seems that this one expectation isn’t met on a continual basis in the drive to be the first to get a news story out. Gone are the days when an editor would meticulously pour over every word to ensure that what got printed was pure gold. In the age of 24-hour news coverage and internet newspapers, there seems to be little interest in preserving this one tradition. Instead, the editors are slacking and instead relying on the average reader to spot the errors and use the handy “Report typo or correction” link. Right in each article, they are admitting their own journalistic ineptitude by being audacious by admitting they’re too lethargic to spot their own errors before they make a story available for the reader at large.

New criteria alarm immigrant

Another fine example I have to demonstrate the disregard for the English language is this from a screen cap I took while playing Age of Conan. The quest was to get the skins from different corrupted creatures and return the skin to the NPC who can’t tell a hole in a donught from one in his ass, but for some reason, has been standing around all this time waiting for me to come to get him these skins. So, the first part of the quest went fine. Whe I went to redeem the quest, on my way into Old Tarantia, I glanced up to check my mini-map in the upper left hand corner of my screen and I noticed the quest outline next to it and the spelling error. Pray tell, what is a ‘Wolerine’?  Was it perhaps supposed to be a “Wolverine”?

It’s obvious that whoever was spelling checking this was either drugged up on something or their spellchecker was bork’d. In either case… you can always refer to your paper source and look up a word the old fashion way. With a dictionary! I still have a dictionary on my desk. It’s far superior to the dictionaries I can find online because I don’t have to wait for a search engine to do its search. I can find what I need and a nice concise definition. I love my Oxford Dictionary of Current English; I’ve used it since high school and it’s served me well. A spellchecker can never truly replace the paper dictionary or core knowledge of the language in which one is writing.

Despite that in recent months, the Conservatives have mounted an election-style smear campaign against Stephane Dion and the Liberals, alleging that the Liberals would blow the federal surplus (wait, wasn’t that surplus a result of former Prime Minister Paul Martin’s tenure as Minister of Finance? Not that it matters but it seems that there would be no surplus to speak of without Martin…), soften the sentences for repeat offenders, take away the child tax credit (a whole $1200/annum, which doesn’t even pay for a month of child care in a major city)… and basically polluted the air waves with their diatribes about how Dion is unfit to be PM… the same Conservative Party is now sueing the Liberals for $2.5 million…

So, what exactly is Harper having a tantrum over? Oh right, the Cadman affair, in which the Conservatives supposedly funded life insurance for the former MP. The condition was based upon his return to parliament in 2005 to help topple Martin’s minority Liberal government. And this would be easy to clear up if Cadman (Chuck Cadman) hadn’t been diagnosed with terminal cancer and hence had his time on earth cut short.

Here’s the kicker, it seems that in the end, Cadman didn’t follow throw and instead voted with the Liberals. This makes the situation sticky, but either way, unlike the allegations being used against the Liberal party, this one actually has water and could hold up in court. That’s if the judge doesn’t decide that this lawsuit is frivolous and throws it out, leaving no recourse other than a parliamentary investigation (just what we need, another snore-a-thon a-la Mulroney-Schrieber affair and the endless pointless questions…).

As for evidence indicting the Conservative Party and Harper, there is a tape (isn’t that convenient?) in which party officials are heard making the offer to Cadman. Nevertheless, Harper and his cronies are alleging that it was doctored, according to court documents. That doesn’t change the fact that there is still a tape implicating them as key players in this scandal.

The alleged tape, used by Vancouver author Tom Zytaruk who penned the newest Cadman biography is also said to be incomplete, though the author, unconnected to the parties involved says otherwise.

Now then, to complicate matters further, the Liberals had gone as far as to publish this issue on their website, giving it a spot on their site’s headline. And this is precisely why the Tories are taking them to court, because the material was published on the Liberal’s website. Never mind that the Tories were using other mediums to get out their hate messages.

Pot, meet kettle…

Or at least that’s what the Halton Catholic School board would have you think. And that the slightest challenge would drive the faithful to question why they believe in their religion. For this reason, certain books must be kept from the hands of children lest they think for themselves, something that is evidently contrary to the mantra of church indoctrination.

The book in question today is not one of the seven books of the Harry Potter canon (though Dumbledore’s sexuality has caused quite a stir) but of the His Dark Material trilogy (Golden Compass) by Philip Pullman. A trilogy labelled as tripe written by an Atheist (as if somehow this discredits him as a person; nothing more than a bias; discrimination if you will) and the books as anti-religion, anti-god and anti-Catholic characters and plot.

There was some concern that if students were exposed to the contents of the trilogy it may cause them to lose faith – Marianne Mazzorato, superintendent of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.

Well, if children would lose their faith, did it ever occur to these zealots that it’s not because of the book itself but because children are able to think for themselves and able to see through the farce that is religion? That maybe they just aren’t buying the church’s line about salvation and the threat of hell for being different.

Of course, it could very well be that these people have never actually read the book, much like the anti-Harry Potter brigade, who was more than happy to throw about allegations that the series encouraged delinquent behaviour, despite that if you actually read the books you’d see some very wholesome themes, ie: good versus evil (with good winning), friendship…

Meanwhile, another Catholic school board, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School Board is reviewing it and placing labels on the book due to Halton’s choice to ban the books in question.

The label reassures the reader that the book is indeed fiction; fiction much like the Bible.

Representations of the church in this novel are purely fictional; the council, the officials and the God in the novel in no way represent the reality of the Roman Catholic Church to which we are blessed to be members.

Younger people know it’s fiction, too bad the adults can’t tell the difference. But what does one expect when someone has been indoctrinated in their youth, given no alternative to that mind-numbing tripe that the church passes off as the ultimate truth?

Golden COmpass becomes cautionary tale

As a person who enjoyed the Harry Potter series, I was intrigued by His Dark Materials trilogy. I have all three books and I’m reading Golden Compass, and I have yet to see the problem that these people are bellyaching about. Perhaps maybe I am immune to it being an Atheist myself and having no problem with the themes of this book. It could also be that I see this as purely a work of fiction and something to be enjoyed.

You know, if you’re worried about a book shattering someone’s faith then your faith is too shaky to withstand the test of time without a lot of strong-armed tactics. If a person’s faith is strong then a mere work of fiction shouldn’t be able to shake that foundation. If it leads someone to question their faith, then that faith was weak in the first place and no amount of censorship will change that.

a
